Among their other achievements, publishers Gavin J Grant & Kelly Link received a World Fantasy Award for Small Beer Press & Big Mouth House in 2009. Eugenia Williamson of the Boston Globe noted, “The works Small Beer produces are so unique that they could come from nowhere else, a singularity that fosters the same kind of loyalty music buffs feel toward their favorite record labels.”
Pretty Monsters, Kelly’s critically acclaimed anthology for both adult and YA audiences, was a NEA Big Read selection for 2018. Neil Gaiman says Kelly, a National Endowment for the Arts creative writing fellow, should be declared a "national treasure." Fellow Clarion Instructor Holly Black, author of The Spiderwick Chronicles, calls her "a flat-out genius." "In a place few writers go," writes TIME, "a netherworld between literature and fantasy, Alice Munro and J. K. Rowling, Link finds truths that most authors wouldn't dare touch." Salon describes her as "an alchemical mixture of Borges, Raymond Chandler, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
Established in 1968, the Clarion Writers’ Workshop is the oldest workshop of its kind and is widely recognized as a premier proving and training ground for aspiring writers of fantasy and science fiction. Kelly and Gavin's evening concludes the 2018 reading series at Mysterious Galaxy.
