I Read YA Tour w/ Westerfeld, Schrefer, Lee, & Chen

I Read YA Tour

Are you a reader and fan of YA literature, or perhaps curious to see what the ever expanding world of YA has to offer? Join us at Mysterious Galaxy as we host the “I Read YA Tour,” with special guests Scott Westerfeld, Eliot Schrefer, Fonda Lee, and Justina Chen.

Scott Westerfeld is the author of seventeen YA titles, his most notable to date being his Uglies series. The world of Uglies is set in a future where cosmetic surgery is a requirement as of age sixteen. Scott has also written five novels for adults and has worked on several graphic novel projects such as the Spill Zone books. His latest published work is Impostors, the first of four new novels that will once again take place in the world of Uglies. Frey and Rafi have more than the typical sister relationship. Only known to few within their family’s circle, Frey is actually Rafi’s body double, and therefore has been taught how to kill. When Frey is sent to act as collateral in Rafi’s place, she finds herself on unfamiliar ground. As the son of a rival leader slowly grows close to her, Frey must figure out who, if anyone, she can trust.

Eliot Schrefer discovered what he was supposed to do with his life after a chance dinner with friends. During the meal, he claimed, “anyone with unlimited time and money would become a novelist,” says his website. In that same year, he began his journey with writing fiction and hasn’t looked back since. His first novel, Glamorous Disasters, took inspiration from his own experiences of working off his student debt by tutoring kids of wealthy families. His soon to be published book, Orphaned, follows a young gorilla named Snub. A natural disaster leaves Snub’s home unrecognizable and her baby sibling alone in her care. If things couldn’t get worse, a new predator has been glimpsed in the woods; something that walks on two legs. When one of these new creatures becomes orphaned too, Snub against her better judgement takes it in, entwining the two species on a similar path for better or worse.

Fonda Lee is a former corporate strategist who now writes science fiction and fantasy for both adult and young adult audiences. Her first book in the Green Bone Saga, Jade City, was nominated for the Nebula and Locus awards, and was named Best Book of 2017 by several outlets. Cross Fire, her latest work, is a follow up to her science fiction novel Exo, where Earth has now become a colony for a species of aliens. After a human terrorist group destroys the peace that has reigned for one hundred years of the colony’s existence, the aliens plan to pull out of Earth, believing it too costly to maintain any longer. Donovan, a human member of the colonist alien security forces, is worried this will leave Earth wide open to hostile takeover from others. As Donovan inches closer to a solution that will avoid an impending war, he might have to make the ultimate sacrifice for his species.

Justina Chen is a writer of young adult fiction and motivational books. She also co-founded Readergirlz, which her bio describes as a “cutting-edge literacy and social media project for teens.” It is worth noting that Readergirlz has won the National Book Foundation’s Award for Innovations in Reading in 2009. One of Justina’s latest YA novel is Lovely, Dark, and Deep. After returning home from a trip abroad, Viola Li realizes she has developed an extreme case of photosensitivity, making life as she knew it near impossible. Her well-meaning but overprotective parents make sure she stays away from the outside world. As Viola tries to maintain a semblance of a life, she meets funny and ridiculously handsome Josh, who is as equally well-built as he is brooding. As their relationship quickly escalates, Viola decides to take increasing amounts of risky decisions. When one of them, a rebellion against her parents, backfires, she must find a way to keep life and love within her reach.

Before humans, and before human history, there were the apes.

Snub is a young gorilla, living in the heart of what will eventually be known as Africa. She is jealous of her mother's new baby . . . and restless in her need to explore. When a natural disaster shakes up her family, Snub finds herself as the guardian of her young sibling . . . and lost in a reshaped world.

Snub may feel orphaned, but she is not alone. There are other creatures stalking through the woods -- a new form of predator, walking on two legs. One of their kind is also orphaned, and is taken in by Snub. But the intersection of the human world and the gorilla world will bring both new connections and new battles.

In his boldest work yet, two-time National Book Award finalist Eliot Schrefer shows us a riveting, heartbreaking early encounter between ape and man -- told from the ape's point of view. It is a journey unlike any other in recent literature.
