Joy McCullough is an author and playwright who works mainly from her home in the Seattle area. Her debut young adult novel, Blood Water Paint, has been called, “haunting… teems with raw emotion” by The New Yorker. The book has received several honors, including being an ALA Morris Debut Award Finalist, Indie Next Spring pick, Boston Globe’s Best Book of 2019, and YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults 2019. In Rome, during the early 1600s, twelve-year-old Artemisia Gentileschi is faced with only two choices after the death of her mother: life as a nun or life grinding pigment for her father’s ink. She chooses the latter. By the time she turns seventeen, she has become one of Rome’s most talented, and unknown, painters. But after she is brutally raped, she finds herself at another of life’s crossroads: a life of silence or a life of truth.
