When not writing stories of her own, Maika Moulite uses her digital prowess to help nonprofits and major organizations tell their stories online. Her sister Maritza has worked in various capacities for news organizations NBC News, CNN, and USA TODAY. The pair’s first book together, Dear Haiti, Love Alaine, is a young adult story of Alaine Beauparlant, a teenage Haitian-American girl with a lot to discover. After a prank gone wrong gets the aspiring journalist suspended from school, she is sent to her family’s estate in Haiti, the homeland she has never known. At the exact moment, her estranged mother is also there, recuperating from a political fiasco. As Alaine is put to work at her aunt’s start-up, helping native children in need, she happens upon a wealth of family documents that may not only save her academic standings, but also help her connect to the mother she hardly knows. In a starred review, Publishers Weekly says, “The Moulite sisters' well-conceived debut is an alternately funny and bittersweet story of loss, regret, love, and sacrifice.”
