Women in Aviation International (WAI) San Diego chapter welcomes retired commercial pilot and author Robin (R.D.) Kardon as a guest speaker for their first chapter meeting of 2019. Robin will be presenting her newly released novel Flygirl, which tells the story of one female pilot’s struggle with discrimination in the 1990s male-dominated aviation industry. The novel is based on Robin’s own experiences as one of the first female pilots to integrate into an all-male corporate flight department. San Diego Magazine just named Robin as one of the “5 San Diego Authors to Read in 2019”.
WAI is a non-profit organization of over 15,000 members worldwide, dedicated to providing networking, education, mentoring and scholarship opportunities for young girls and women who are striving for challenging and fulfilling careers in the aviation and aerospace industries. Women are only 6% of all licensed pilots in the world, 14% of aerospace engineers, 16% of air traffic controllers, and only 2% of aircraft mechanics. WAI’s mission is to change this dynamic and provide opportunities in all aspects of this male-dominated industry.
The WAI San Diego chapter has over 60 members including private, charter, corporate, airline and military pilots; student pilots and flight instructors; aerospace engineers; airport managers; General Aviation business staff; flight attendants; air traffic controllers; and aviation enthusiasts.
Attendance to this event is free, though guests are encouraged to become members of WAI San Diego to support their efforts to inspire the next generation to pursue the many wonderful careers in aviation. Details on the organization, including how to join WAI and the local chapter, can be found on their website.
